Hammock Hanging Tips

Hammock Hang Calculator

Please note: For a general idea of hammock hanging, add the following info to the calculator below:

  1. Distance between anchors
  2. Weight in hammock

This is generally all that's needed to get reasonably close to hammock hanging perfection. From here you can add a knot to the suspension strings (shorten distance) or add carabiners (lengthen distance) to perfect the hammock height.

For those who want to dial it in the distance further:

    • The distance between anchors (leave blank if you are looking for this value, for example building a stand)
    • The suspension length begins at the string knot and any carabiners, extensions and d-rings are all considered part of the suspension.
    • Hammock length (our hammocks are 170" without knot or ~160" with knot plus a 10-12" extension). We recommend considering the first ~12" from anchor as extension.
    • Weight in hammock
    • Preferred sit height (recommended 18")
    • If you are determining the distance between anchors, fill out the extension length. This is the distance from the anchor point plus 12" (default value) or the distance from the string knot to the anchor point.
    • For those playing around in the advanced menu, we recommend a 30º hang angle

    Fastening

Attachment points (easily found at local hardware stores)

        • Be sure your attachment points are rated for weight. We recommend a fastener that is double the expected rated weight (minimum).
        • Eye bolts / lag eye screws are common

        • Surface mount attachment D-Rings with lag bolts are exceptionally strong- for the ultimate attachment point we recommend adding a small aluminum plate behind the D-Ring and mount.

    Attachment Additional Materials
        • Carabiners (or S-hooks). We recommend 3 if you're planning on rolling up your hammock. We recommend a carabiner (or S-hook) that is rated at double the expected weight (minimum).

    Attachment Surfaces

      • Posts: Weather treated hardwood with a minimum size of 4"x4" is recommended. For applications without building a stand, anchoring to concrete is recommended.
      • Walls / ceilings: Always ensure you're attaching to a wall stud (or joist if choosing the ceiling). Never secure your hammock to a hollow wall.
      • Trees: We recommend trees at least 12" in diameter and to use a tree strap. Tree straps not only help to protect the tree, they're also easier to reposition if needed.
